Description

The material in this module is based on pioneering work by Team Management Systems in the different types of work and individual preferences for work. Unlike social styles, the focus here is specifically on how we like to work as individuals and as teams. What is the make up of your team and do you have the people in the positions that want to do the work that the role requires? An understanding of work and work preferences can provide you as a manager and leader with critical understanding of how work gets done in an enterprise and your role is helping it get done. You will see that this material is complementary to the MBTI that you just studied.

Outcomes

  • As a manager you will understand what work is and how to get work done well within your department and assign work based on who can best get it done.
  • As a manager you will assess and assemble teams with the necessary work preferences so that you can achieve the results you envision.

Performance tasks

  • Print out the three TMS Profile slides and do the following:
    • On the third slide, put a check mark on each scale reflecting how you perceive yourself on that scale. The reading below, the MBTI assessment you took, and the descriptions on the first two slides may help you make a decision where on each scale you fall.
    • One the second slide, after reading the descriptions of each work preference on slide one and on slide two, put a "P" on the work preference that most matches what you believe is the way you prefer to work. Write a "1" on the work preference that next most matches what you believe is the way you prefer to work and write a "2" on the next most work preference.
  • Share this information with a close friend and compare notes on what you feel most represents each of your views of your work preferences. Write down your thoughts and bring with you to the next workshop.

Week 6 assignment

Read the article The Language of Teamwork. This article introduces new concepts and through the reading and the exercises, they will become more clear.

On the attached Linking Skill's survey, print out and next to each linking skill in the blank provided, write down some ideas on what you believe that you need to improve. Refer back to the article above for more clarification and information on each linking skill.

Now read this short but powerful case study on linking, Trainer's Yarn about Linking. Reflect on how this case study relates to how you relate with others on your team. If you have questions, write them down and bring to the workshop to share.

"People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel."
